The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium was the site of a thrilling match on this Wednesday night as Real Madrid defeated Rayo Vallecano 2-1 after a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the game. This match demonstrated how turbulent this season has been for Madrid, as they went from an early lead to being devastated by injuries, frustrated fans, and ultimately needing a goal from Kylian Mbappé in the 98th minute via penalty to pull off the win.
The match started with Madrid changing their formation to a 4-4-2 with Franco Mastantuono playing in the right wing. During the first quarter of the match, the players seemed to be working well together, but it wasn’t until an unfortunate injury in the 8th minute to Jude Bellingham, who felt something when he pushed toward the goal without being contacted, that their cohesion began to crumble. Despite significant treatment for Jude and encouragement from Mbappé, Jude was forced to leave the pitch and was replaced by Brahim Díaz.
Madrid were able to use the initial shock from the first few minutes of the game as fuel for their performance. Vinicius Jr’s goal in the 14th minute broke the deadlock and was celebrated with an emphatic kiss on the Madrid club badge, a sign of defiance after a week of heavy criticism. Vinicius Jr and Arda Güler continued to look for ways to get through the Rayo defence, but the opposition was not willing to back down either. Thibaut Courtois had to make many world class saves throughout the match to prevent Rayo from scoring, especially when a poor back pass from Tchouaméni gave Rayo a chance to equalise.
The second half brought the worst possible start for the home team. In the 48th minute, Rayo’s Jorge de Frutos brought the game level, sending waves of frustration and whistles from the Bernabéu fans. As tensions continued to rise, the match turned into a chaotic battle. Mbappe nearly created a monumental moment by going past the Rayo goalkeeper alone, but his shot hit the top of the crossbar instead.
The momentum shifted when Rayo’s Pathé Ciss received a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Dani Ceballos, leaving Rayo with only ten players for the remainder of the game. For nine minutes of stoppage time, Madrid attacked Rayo’s goal, with both Camavinga and Rodrygo missing by just inches from putting a ball in the net.
Finally in the 97th minute, a penalty was given for Brahim Díaz being fouled in the box. Amidst deafening cheers from the Madrid fans, Kylian Mbappé nailed the winning penalty at 98 minutes, doing a similar badge-kiss as Vinícius before him as well. After Rodrygo and Rayo’s Pep Chavarria had some pushing/shoving after the goal resulted in Pep receiving a second yellow card, thus landing him another red, with that all that left was for the points to go to Madrid. It wasn’t how Madrid wanted to perform, but coming off such bad performances, they are going to take any win and feel great about it.
